What is a Withholding Tax?
Withholding Tax is a tax charged on certain cross-border payments like interest, dividend, royalties, service fees, or pensions that are paid by a South African person to SARS for the benefit of a foreign person , where the income originates in South Africa. The foreign person is responsible for the tax but it must be withheld by the person making the payment to or for the benefit of the foreign person. The amount paid is usually taxed at a final withholding tax rate of 15%. Should the payor not have applied for a reduced rate which might be applicable in accordance with a Double Taxation Agreement between the two countries, we can assist with the refund of the overpaid taxes.
