Cape Town climbed 24 places in StartupBlink’s 2026 global index, growing 39% in a year. It is now Africa’s third-ranked startup city and is quickly rising in the continent’s top ten.
Ranking is important, but we need to understand which businesses suit Cape Town best. And those are businesses selling beyond South Africa.
How Cape Town compares with Johannesburg, Lagos, and Nairobi
Cape Town ranks 114th globally, compared with Nairobi at 116th and Johannesburg at 122nd. Johannesburg grew by 9% over the year, Nairobi by 3%, and Cairo by 1%.
There is a repeated statistic that is often quoted as current, but dates back to August 2018. It is the claim that Cape Town has 450 tech companies employing between 40 000 and 50 000 people. However, there is newer evidence that makes a better case for the city.
Why Cape Town works for international businesses
The time zone is the biggest advantage. South Africa stays on GMT+2 throughout the year. In Cape Town, you could have a morning call with Singapore, an afternoon working alongside Europe, and some overlap with New York before close of business.
English is another advantage. South Africa ranks 13th on the EF English Proficiency Index. People working in finance, technology, and professional services were educated and trained in English, so they can deal directly and effortlessly with customers, boards, and investors abroad.
There is an immense offshore talent base already. South Africa’s global business services sector grew from 65 000 people in 2019 to 150 000 in 2024, with more than 70 000 of those roles in the Western Cape. The country also has around 120 000 developers, with roughly 40% already working remotely for international companies. Much of this growth is feeding demand for outsourced finance function support, as international companies look to build finance capability here rather than relocate it.
Startup funding and exits in Cape Town
In SAVCA’s 2026 survey, 49% of participating fund managers are based in Cape Town, and they deployed 44% of total investment value.
Overseas buyers have been acquiring Cape Town businesses for a decade. Automattic bought WooThemes and WooCommerce, built in Cape Town since 2008, in May 2015. 2U paid $103 million for GetSmarter in 2017. Ticketmaster acquired Quicket in July 2024. Motorola Solutions bought RapidDeploy in February 2025, a company founded in Cape Town in 2016 that moved its head office to Austin and kept its engineering team here.
Cape Town has not produced a billion-dollar exit of its own. BVNK comes closest and does not quite count. Mastercard paid up to $1.8 billion for it in August 2026, but the company was founded in London in 2021, by South Africans. What Cape Town has produced is a steady run of eight and nine figure sales to foreign buyers going back to 2015
Flights, cost, and quality of life
Cape Town has direct flights to London, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt, with additional seasonal European services. United flies directly from Newark, and Delta from Atlanta. LATAM added São Paulo in July 2026, while Emirates increased its Dubai service to three flights a day.
Lifestyle also matters when recruiting and accepting positions. For example, a senior candidate comparing offers from Cape Town with London, Berlin, or Amsterdam doesn’t just look at salaries; weather, commute, space, and access to the outdoors all affect the decision.
Costs play a part too with London being around 184% more expensive than Cape Town, and San Francisco costing 156% more. If a company pays in dollars or pounds, that gap closes the deal.
There are, however, drawbacks such as Cape Town property prices; which have risen by nearly 25% over the last five years and the salaries have simply not kept up. Skilled people still leave South Africa, keeping the city at the 5th in Africa with combined startup value.
Startup events in Cape Town worth putting in the diary

- Africa AI Summit: Focussing on the use and development of AI across the continent.
- Africa Tech Festival (AfricaCom): One of Africa’s largest annual technology events, attracting founders, operators, and investors.
- Crypto Fest: Covers cryptocurrency, blockchain, and payments.
- Africa Investor Week: Brings several startup, investment, and gaming events.
- Startup Grind Cape Town: Regular events for local founders and investors.
- Startup Huddle at 22 On Sloane: Practical sessions where founders discuss real business problems.

What this means for your finance function
A Cape Town startup earning dollars or pounds and paying salaries in rands is already a multicurrency business. When factoring in overseas customers, different tax jurisdictions, and international investors, the finance function becomes more complicated, even before the team grows and long before it justifies a full in-house department, which is exactly where fractional finance support makes sense.
Investors expect the month to close quickly and the management reports to arrive in a format that they are familiar with. They want a reliable cash forecast, a clear revenue number, and an explanation of what has changed. Something like a bookkeeping export given six weeks after month end will not be enough. This is usually the point where a fractional CFO plays their part by turning raw numbers into a forecast; something investors can use.
Founders often discover this during a raise, when historic numbers need to be rebuilt and questions about revenue, tax, or cash cannot be answered quickly.
We build fractional finance teams for founders dealing with exactly this. Based in Cape Town and London, our teams combine a financial manager, an accountant, a bookkeeper, and a fractional CFO, catering to what the business actually needs and scaling into a fully outsourced strategic finance function as the business grows. If you are building here, we are happy to talk through what the finance function should look like in your first year.
